CharacteristicsThe Euphrates River is 2800 kilometers (1740 miles) long. The youth course of the river begins in Turkey and the mature course travels through Syria and Iraq. The Euphrates join the Tigris river in the alluvial plain of southeastern Iraq to form the Shatt al-Arab and discharge into the Persian Gulf. The river discharges an annual average of 20 billion cubic meters (990 billion cubic feet) of water into the Persian Gulf.
